NAVIS Magazine Explores the Heli-Luxury Experience at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge

September 29, 2026

From pioneering descents in the Tordrillo Mountains to one of Alaska’s most exclusive heli-ski experiences, NAVIS Magazine takes readers deep inside the story of Tordrillo Mountain Lodge.

There are places you visit. And there are places you can only truly experience by leaving the conventional world behind.

In its September 2026 issue, NAVIS Magazine goes deep into the Alaska backcountry with Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in the feature, “Following the Rotor Line into Alaska’s Backcountry.”

The story traces Tordrillo Mountain Lodge from its earliest days of exploration to what it has become today: an intimate luxury wilderness lodge built around extraordinary access to one of the most remarkable mountain environments in North America.

Born From Exploration

Long before there was a luxury lodge on the shores of Judd Lake, there was a helicopter, a small group of skiers and an enormous mountain range waiting to be explored.

NAVIS recounts how early expeditions led by a group that included Olympic downhill gold medalist Tommy Moe and Alaska heli-ski pioneer Mike Overcast began exploring the Tordrillo Mountains more than two decades ago.

Those early trips were not about following established routes. They were about discovering what was possible.

Over multiple seasons, the team explored the range, logged dozens of descents and developed an intimate understanding of its snow, glaciers, peaks and weather systems. Eventually, that exploration led them to Judd Lake and the establishment of Tordrillo Mountain Lodge.

That pioneering spirit still defines the experience today.

40 Minutes From Anchorage. A World Away.

Part of what makes Tordrillo so extraordinary is how quickly civilization disappears.

Guests begin with a flight from Anchorage to our home on Judd Lake, approximately 60 miles northwest of the city. Within about 40 minutes, roads, neighborhoods and everyday life give way to glaciers, forests, volcanic peaks and the immense Alaska wilderness.

There is no road to Tordrillo Mountain Lodge.

And that is precisely the point.

Once guests arrive, aircraft become the gateway to the experience. Helicopters and bush planes are not simply transportation at Tordrillo. They are what make it possible to explore this landscape on a scale few destinations can offer.

Welcome to 1.2 Million Acres of Possibility

During winter, Tordrillo Mountain Lodge provides access to more than 1.2 million acres of heli-skiing and snowboarding terrain across the Tordrillo Range.

With approximately 600 inches of snowfall each season, the scale and diversity of the terrain give our guides an enormous canvas to work with.

Glaciers. Open powder fields. Massive alpine faces. Long descents. Technical couloirs. And seemingly endless horizons.

Every day is different.

Our guides and pilots evaluate weather, snow conditions, visibility and guest ability to determine where the best experience can be found that day. That flexibility means the Tordrillos can deliver unforgettable skiing and snowboarding for powder-capable intermediate guests while offering advanced and expert skiers access to some of Alaska’s most compelling big-mountain terrain.

There are no lifts here. No groomed runs. No base villages.

The infrastructure is airborne.

This Is Heli-Luxury

Adventure has always been at the heart of Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. But what happens after the helicopter returns to Judd Lake is just as important.

We call it heli-luxury.

It is the intersection of elite aviation, extraordinary wilderness access, world-class guiding and highly personalized hospitality.

Our intimate lodges intentionally accommodate a limited number of guests, creating an experience that feels less like staying at a resort and more like having a remarkable corner of Alaska to yourself.

After a day in the mountains, guests return to warm hospitality, chef-driven cuisine, curated wines, massage and recovery, sauna sessions, hot tubs overlooking the wilderness and evenings shared with the people who experienced the day alongside them.

Luxury at Tordrillo is not about separating guests from the wilderness.

It is about making it possible to go deeper into it.

Adventure Meets Recovery

NAVIS also highlights the newest evolution of the Tordrillo experience: our 2,400-square-foot Wellness Center, which opened in 2026.

Designed around the physical demands of adventure, the space brings together movement, fitness, massage, bodywork, sauna, cold immersion and intentional recovery.

It is a natural extension of the Tordrillo philosophy.

Push farther during the day. Recover with purpose. Wake up ready to do it again.

That same philosophy has expanded into summer with experiences such as the AlpenSauna, our helicopter-transportable mobile sauna that can be positioned deep within the Tordrillo Mountains alongside glacier pools, alpine lakes and other remote wilderness locations.

It is wellness that could only exist here.

More Than a Heli-Ski Lodge

What NAVIS captures so well is that Tordrillo Mountain Lodge was not created by selecting a beautiful location and building a resort around it.

The lodge grew out of exploration.

The aircraft, guides, hospitality, cuisine, wellness experiences and lodges have evolved dramatically since those first expeditions into the Tordrillo Mountains. But the fundamental idea remains remarkably similar.

Go farther.

Find the places few people will ever reach.

And experience Alaska on its own terms.

More than two decades after those first exploratory flights, every helicopter departure from Judd Lake still carries a little of that original spirit with it.

The question each morning remains the same:

Where will the mountains take us today?
