Super Tuscans Under the Aurora Borealis

We asked Mike Overcast to give us a peek into the 200-bottle wine cellar at the Lodge, and he indulged us with this fabulous look at two featured wines that are obviously among his favorites.

Mike Overcast–From the Cellars — Sassacaia and Ornellaia 2008

Might as well start with the two Italian bad asses. These two Super Tuscans stand alone, in my opinion. Side by side, they offer similar qualities, yet have specific nuances that even a person new to these wines will pick up. Both estates are only a few miles from each other and sit a few hundred meters above the Mediterranean. The 2008 vintage will stand alone for years to come. The winery notes that a cool spring, hot dry summer and again, a cool dry fall leading into harvest allowed the fruit to develop to a full ripeness. I have had the pleasure to taste both side by side and each deliver a beautiful nose of balsamic and tobacco notes. The Ornellaia offers a bit more subtle fruit tones. On the palate, its all of what you would expect from wineries that garner a fabulous reputation, turning out wines of the highest qualities year after year. I am eager to pull a cork or two of these Italian greats.

We are also searching for an allocation of the Ornellaia le Serre. This second-tier wine from the same estate comes at half the price, with many of the same attributes you would find in the superiore.
Those of you who have been guests of the Tordrillo Mountain Lodge know that Napa is king. You would also know that we are devoted Caymus fans, as well as anything that the Wagner family produces. Nothing has changed. We will be offering new vintages from all three estates, including the Special Select, Caymus Cab, and the very popular Belle Glos. We also have a healthy stock of the Mer Soliel and the un-oaked Silver. From the other side of the Napa Valley, we offer the Insignia and the Joseph Phelps as well as Mondavi greats including a few bottles of the Opus.
We are proud of the depth of our wine collection. Come have a look at the list. I am sure you will find something you will love and determine that there is no need to travel with wines from home.
Good skiing to you all!
Mike
