Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) in Alaska

In the past couple of years, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of the fastest growing water sports around. Stand up paddleboarding is fun for guests of all ages and ability levels. Plus, if you’re just looking for a fun way to enjoy the view, there isn’t a better place to be than at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge.

Here are some of our favorite tips for standing up on your board for the first time:

  • Get the board all the way out into the water so that the bottom of the board doesn’t hit the bottom of the lake.
  • Start off on your knees so that you have a low center of gravity. Take some small practice strokes.
  • Once you feel comfortable with your balance on your knees, slowly stand up one foot at a time. Be sure to stay in the middle of the board.
  • Once you are fully standing, keep a slight knee bend and keep your core centered above the board.
  • Remember to have fun, everyone starts as a beginner!
