Here are some of our favorite tips for standing up on your board for the first time:

  • Get the board all the way out into the water so that the bottom of the board doesn’t hit the bottom of the lake.
  • Start off on your knees so that you have a low center of gravity. Take some small practice strokes.
  • Once you feel comfortable with your balance on your knees, slowly stand up one foot at a time. Be sure to stay in the middle of the board.
  • Once you are fully standing, keep a slight knee bend and keep your core centered above the board.
  • Remember to have fun, everyone starts as a beginner!

For more advanced stand up paddleboarders, Self Magazine has a great article about stand up paddleboard workouts. This tough workout features strength training exercises for your whole body. You can see an entire slideshow of the workout here.
