Sail, kayak, or cruise Prince William Sound

Immerse yourself in stunning scenery while checking out the multitude of fjords, glaciers, waterfalls, and bays that surround the calm waters of Prince William Sound, located southeast of Anchorage. Wildlife such as Grizzly Bears, deer, and eagles abound on the shorelines while whales, seals, sea lions and other aquatic life populate the sound itself. A variety of tour providers and rental agencies offer visitors many options for getting out on the water, making it possible to spend anywhere from a few hours to a whole day here. Anchorage Museum

If you’re interested in Alaskan history, art, and heritage, visiting the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center is the perfect activity for the whole family. Exhibits and displays portray what life was like for native Alaskans and how their culture, art, and science has changed over the years. Admission is very reasonable and the museum also houses a planetarium and a restaurant.

Alaksan Native Heritage Center

Offering a more immersive and hands-on approach to learning about Alaskan native culture, the Alaskan Native Heritage Center features life-size villages representing each of the five main indigenous groups of Alaska. The heritage of these groups is presented through storytelling, dancing, craft-making and other demonstrations. The center is staffed by native Alaskans of all ages who are very knowledgeable and eager to share their culture with visitors. There is also a free shuttle bus that runs from downtown Anchorage to the Heritage Center as well as the Museum and back.

Chugach National Forest

Chugach National Forest lies a short drive from Anchorage and features magnificent views of varying Alaskan terrain. The highway takes visitors on a stunningly beautiful drive through Chugach’s vast and dense forest with an incredible backdrop of rolling hills and towering peaks. Frequent pullout spots allow for wildlife viewing and amazing photography opportunities. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, the forest contains world-class back country hiking trails.
