Early Heli Skiing Footage

January 6, 2015

We’re exactly one month away from the beginning of heli skiing season at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. And to celebrate we’re sharing early heli skiing footage from Mt. Alyeska, Alaska. SkiAK recently posted a video to YouTube of heli skiing during the 1950’s at Mt. Alyeska prior to the mountain becoming a ski resort. This original film was digitized in November 1914.

In 1954, Girdwood residents raised enough money to purchase the land that eventually became Alyeska ski resort. According to Alyeska Resort, a french baron named Francois de Gunzburg installed the first chairlift on the land and the rest is history.

Today if you’re looking to find the best heli skiing in Alaska look no further than Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. This early heli skiing footage gets us stoked about how far the sport has come. At the lodge our world-class guides have over 15 years of heli skiing experience and your safety is their top priority. Heli skiing and boarding season at the lodge starts February 6th and runs through April 25th. The starting in June we offer our popular Cast and Carve session: heli skiing corn snow in the morning and heli fishing for king salmon in the afternoon. It is a lot of fun packed into one day.
