Snow & Terrain

Exciting Choices. Endless Options.

Flexible daily agendas, 1.2 million acres of Alaska heli ski terrain, and 600 inches of light snow each season mean the Tordrillo Mountains offer endless terrain options for the most diverse, exciting heli skiing and boarding terrain in the world. Our Alaska Heli skiing guides start each day assessing field observations, snow pit data, remote weather stations, and input from our pilots to choose the best drop spots for that day’s activities, based on skill level and interest. High-pressure systems common in this region usually mean dry weather and clear skies that come with sunshine and good snow stability. Temperatures average 15º to 25º and powder hounds will get their fill with runs that top out at 7,500 feet and end at 2,000 feet, and couloir-incised peaks with a panoramic view of Mt. McKinley and volcanic summits. If poor weather moves in, we head for more gentle terrain where the snowpack is less avalanche prone.

Find Your Place in the Tordrillos
In a couple of warm-up runs, heli ski guides will be able to evaluate your ability and determine where to start you out. Along the way, they will continue to assess your progress and work you into more challenging heli ski terrain that increasingly presents bigger thrills, but at a pace you’re comfortable with. The key is to make sure that you’re never under challenged, or overwhelmed. Intermediate skiers find the terrain is challenging enough to keep them interested, but not so difficult that it is intimidating. Advanced and expert skiers will have the opportunity to push themselves in some of the most scenic and thrilling mountains in the world, as our heli ski guides take time to evaluate appropriate route selections in steeper, more consequential terrain.

Alaska Heli Skiing Guides & Safety

The Art & Science of Snow Safty

The ultimate powder experience begins with the guides. The seasoned Alaska heli skiing guides at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge are among the most accomplished, experienced and safe mountain and skiing professionals in all the world. Each of our heli skiing guides has at least 15 years of experience with hundreds of Alaska heli skiing runs cataloged in the Tordrillo Mountains. They have a keen awareness of the constantly changing environment and how to mitigate potential hazards.

As your hosts for the week, you will quickly come to understand the Tordrillo Heli Ski difference when it comes to exceptional guiding. Every week, heli ski guides scout new mountain terrain, often taking guests to claim first descents.

Our team blends the art and science of snow safety, our extensive experience with Alaska topography and winter conditions, and applies that knowledge to the terrain we ski. We also match each run with a skier’s ability, confidence, and desire to take on new challenges. Each heli ski guide must have current medical, technical, and snow science training, and all certifications and required guidelines of the Guide Associations.

Alaska Heli Skiing Equipment and Gear

alaska heli ski gear

Bring your favorite powder skis or snowboard, or just your boots, and we’ll take of it from there. We can outfit you with the essential heli board and heli ski equipment, including the latest fat boards for deep powder and all-mountain conditions. Our heli ski guides explain the features of the different gear and make recommendations based on what you are comfortable riding, then adjust the settings and wax them for your use.
Avalanche rescue gear provided includes a Mammut probe and shovel, an ABS flotation pack and Pulse Barrivox transceivers. In addition to the heli ski equipment, each trip starts with guides explaining the technology and potential scenarios in the event of a search and rescue resulting from an avalanche. Our heli ski guides are trained in group leadership and terrain management. Before each outing, they will discuss dangers to be aware of so that exposure to the risks of traveling in avalanche terrain is reduced.

Alaska Heli Skiing Aircrafts

An onsite helicopter and ski and float plane are ready to whisk you away to the world’s most talked about Alaska heli skiing, fishing, hiking, rafting, glacier exploring and wildlife viewing. For skiers and boarders, the only way to explore the mountains and valleys that carve out the Alaska Range is by the Eurocopter AS 350-B3, better known as the A-Star. Known for its power, speed, and agility, this helicopter is the foundation of our safety-first operations. Tordrillo Heli Ski partners with professional helicopter operators to provide on-site transportation services. Our company is known for its dedicated mechanics and A-Star pilots who have been providing safe, reliable lifts in Alaska for years.

For fixed wing support we use DeHavilland Beavers, stationed in Anchorage and at Tordrillo Mountain Lodge. They are the workhorses behind safe, efficient transportation to the property and throughout the different ski zones we frequent. A Piper Super Cub, known for its ability to take off and land in very short distances, is also available for remote scouting and pioneering of airstrips near powder stashes and fuel depots.
